Martin Schongauer
“The Temptation of St Anthony”, ca.1470
(Edited)
This is an new edit of the original print from the Xeuxis Studio. The lines making the image were simply placed on a clean, even background. In addition, the image was transformed into a rich cobalt blue as a ‘duotone’. The recognisable Schongauer ‘logo’ (M + S) has of course also been preserved. The adaptation lends this iconic, fantastic motif a new contemporary relevance.
As a hermit in the desert, St Anthony (according to legend 251-356 AD) is said to have been plagued by demons. Schongauer shows him as calmly enduring, beset by demonic hybrid creatures that have emerged from an imaginative combination of observations of nature. Unusually, Schongauer has set the scene virtually floating in the air. This motif has been well known throughout its four and a half Centuries of history and was admired by Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer and Michelangelo, among others. It inspired some of their works.
Martin Schongauer (1445/1450-1491) is considered the greatest engraver before Albrecht Dürer and is also the first identifiable producer of fine prints. Not much is knows about Schongauer’s life. His legacy includes some inforgettable images.
The matt Hahnemühle paper is a particularly elegant choice for editions of old engravings.
