Vincent van Gogh, Oleanders, (Still Life with Oleanders and Book)
For Van Gogh, oleanders were cheerful, life-affirming flowers that bloomed “inexhaustibly” and always “put forth robust new shoots.” In this painting from August 1888, the flowers fill a majolica jug. On the table, there is a copy of Émile Zola’s novel, ‘The Joy of Living’ (La joie de vivre).
