In this chaotic scene, mankind has lost its faith and is drowning in the sea of life. The heads of the Dutch writers Willem Kloos and Lodewijk van Deyssel are still just above the water. In the middle, bayonets are sticking out of the ground, symbols of secular power ruling through violence. But all hope is not lost, for Psyche, the Soul, sails in on two swans from the left.
