Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was an important Japanese artist of the Ukiyo-e genre.
Over a career spanning seventy years, he created an extensive oeuvre with around 3000 colour prints, over 200 book illustrations, hundreds of drawings and over 1000 paintings.
Hokusai’s influence on art history was enormous, with an impact on many European artists such as Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. His work played a key role in the Japonism movement.
