Antonio del Pollaiuolo (Italian, 1431/32–1498)
This etching belongs to the earliest Renaissance prints depicting the naked male body in action. Antonio del Pollaiuolos warriors seem like Klones of each oher in varying poses. The print may have functioned as a model for workshop apprentices studying human anatomy while learning to draw. Art historians remain uncertain whether Pollaiuolo intended to depict a particular story or historical event. It is possible that he created a deliberately ambiguous allegory. For example, the chain held by the two central men could suggest an old idea that the body is the chain of the soul, which is only released in death.
The image of the original print is approximately 42 x 60.5 cm, so the edition at 80 x 60 cm shows the image at roughly the original size. Auf dem hochwertigen Hahnenmühlepapier wird diese Reproduktion eines absoluten Juwels der Renaissance-Bildkunst zu einem besonders hochwertigen Stück.
