Snakes, from the encyclopedic work: A History of the Earth and Animated Nature by Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774). This publication attempted to combine a history of the earth with a description of its geographical features and of many of its species.
What is often amusing for our modern perception of depictions of animals of the 18th and 19th centuries is the depiction of relatively expressive ‘human’ facial expressions.
