The Giant Hercules
Copperplate engraving, circa 1589, (original image size: 563 mm x 402 mm)
This remarkable engraving has long been known as the Knollenman, or bulbous man. It shows Goltzius’ muscular figure style in its most extreme form. At the time, the strong and powerful Hercules was often seen in the Netherlands as a symbol of resistance against Spain.
