Hieronymus Tetius,
Barberini Faun,

This is a depiction from 1642 of the famous marble sculpture, the so-called ‘Barberini Faun’ (now on display in the Glyptothek in Munich). It seems that for a time the faun was thought to belong in a reclining position, and it is possibly this early state of restoration that is shown here in the engraving originally made in 1642 for the volume ‘Aedes Barberinae’ by Hieronymus Tetius, a largely text-based description and tribute to the palace and the Barberini collection. The faun is depicted inverted, and it is not uncommon for these engravings depicting sculptures to take considerable creative liberties and show the ‘real’ living creature that is the subject of the sculpture rather than the cold stone art object – as is certainly the case with this sexy beast here! The solid rock in the engraving is also an invention.

The print size 40 x 30cm shows the image is its aproximate original size. Especially on the matt Hahnemühle paper, the print in this size is a veritable facsimile. The whole thing in an old frame … Only a shrewd expert would notice that this is a reproduction!

We are particularly proud of this file, which we have painstakingly restored, retouched and optimized from a rare original print.
