Edward Hopper, Ground Swell
The painting from 1939 shows a group of young people in a boat caught up in a wave that gives the painting its title. The bright, sunlit image shows Hopper’s enthusiasm for the sea, but a sense of isolation pervades the painting. The loneliness of the boat and the rather threatening presence of a buoy could indicate themes of an impending threat.
